“The idea that one should have the religious freedom to discriminate against other religions seems like a strange perversion,” Phoenix Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz told Phoenix New Times. “The most important thing is that children are put in the best homes, not the most Christian homes.”

"For parents looking to open their homes to children in the foster care system, it can be surprisingly daunting to navigate the complex system of foster and adoption. That’s the rationale behind a new family fellowship program from Phoenix-based YATOM: The Jewish Foster and Adoption Network, which offers prospective parents the chance to come together for support and guidance. This year, for the first time, the organization is offering two tracks: a national cohort and an in-person cohort comprised of local families, couples and individuals seeking to foster or adopt."

The Forward
Allison was in the first cohort of fellows for YATOM: THE JEWISH FOSTER & ADOPTION NETWORK. Yatom, which means orphan in Hebrew, is trying to bring more Jewish families into the public foster care network, where they can foster a series of children as needed or, in some cases, adopt their foster child. Foster care presents its challenges, including having to accommodate the child’s cultural and religious identities in a Jewish home. But Jewish foster parents say that it epitomizes the Jewish value of protecting the vulnerable, and that the Jewish community should start welcoming foster children like it has adopted children.

I have dreams for all of my children; that their potential will be realized and that they’ll have bright fulfilling lives. But these dreams are tinted by my experience as a white man. When I look back at my own childhood as a time of continuous, unthreatened growth — something that’s far less certain for my foster children of color — I see clearly now that the difference is race
